Crown Castle vs Prysmian: What Our Campus Fiber Build Taught Me About Total Cost

Two buildings, one parking lot, 6,500 feet of cable between them. That was our campus network project in 2024. My first instinct was to lease the connection from Crown Castle—zero upfront, one monthly bill, no construction project. We went the other way.

We bought Prysmian fiber optic cable and built the connection ourselves. The 10-year total cost came in about 40% below the Crown Castle lease—and the cable itself was only 29% of the build price.

The rest of the cost was everything the lease quote hid: conduit, boring, cable glands, terminations, inspections, and labor hours consumed by components I never knew existed. If you're the person tasked with procuring the connection between two buildings, you're about to learn the same lesson I did: the cheapest cable quote is rarely the cheapest project.

Who this is coming from

I'm the office administrator for a 300-person engineering firm on a three-building campus. I manage about $400,000 in annual purchasing across 8 vendors. In 2024, the facilities manager and IT lead asked me to handle procurement for our new building's network link. Honestly, I had zero cable experience. I made mistakes. I kept a spreadsheet. This is what came out of it.

The comparison: Crown Castle lease vs. Prysmian build

Our IT manager built an early cost model. On one side, Crown Castle would provide a 10-gig fiber link across campus. On the other, we'd build a 12-strand fiber plant using Prysmian cable and terminate it ourselves.

  • Crown Castle lease: $850/month, maintenance included, one contract. 10-year total: $102,000.
  • Prysmian build: roughly $59,000 all-in, including a maintenance reserve.

Even with a maintenance reserve, owning the plant was roughly 40% cheaper over a decade. What kept me hesitating was the part no spreadsheet shows: the lease meant one invoice, no construction, and zero calls about cable failure. The build basically meant managing four vendors, two permits, and a contractor schedule.

We chose the build because our campus is a 20-year asset. Paying $850 a month, forever, for a connection entirely on our own property felt like renting your own driveway. (This was March 2024 math—I'll cover when the lease makes more sense at the end.)

What I saw at the Prysmian Group Manchester NH plant

Our electrical contractor recommended Prysmian. He had visited the Prysmian Group's Manchester, NH facility on a previous job and gave me a warning I repeat to anyone who'll listen: "Your labor costs more than your cable. Cheap cable eats labor."

In March 2024, I went with him to the Manchester plant. It rewired how I read a spec sheet.

Most buyers—including me, at first—focus on price per foot. What I saw in Manchester is that manufacturing consistency is the product. Samples from production runs go through the quality lab. Reels get electrical testing before they ship. Footage markers line up with your length plan. The cable strips cleanly for termination. None of that appears on an invoice. All of it shows up in labor hours, one way or another.

Am I an engineer after one plant visit? No. But I know what it's like to lose a workday because the cable spooled off the reel differently than expected. The cheap quote never puts a dollar value on that risk. The invoice does.

The $390 cable glands mistake

Trust me on this one: the most expensive part of a cable project is never the cable. It's the labor you waste on bad details.

Our installation needed 84 cable glands—the fittings that seal cable where it enters junction boxes, panels, and enclosures. I bought cheaper glands from a different supplier: $3.20 each versus $7.85 for Prysmian cable glands. A $390 difference. I figured a gland is a gland.

They weren't.

The cheap glands were rated for a cable diameter range, but their tolerance was too tight for the actual Prysmian jacket. The crew spent parts of two days wrestling them on, filing components, and re-seating seals. (Not exactly what I wanted in an inspection report.)

We swapped to the Prysmian glands after roughly a day and a half of lost labor: about $6,300 in crew time. My savings were $390.

Now every accessory gets spec'd to the cable, not to the price list.

Platinum BP5450 and the fire alarm riser

The same project needed a fire alarm riser in the new building. Our fire safety consultant specified Prysmian Platinum BP5450. He didn't justify it to me—he just wrote it into the spec. When I asked why, he said: "When a fire alarm cable fails, you don't get a second chance. You get a liability."

I don't have hard data on how often cheap fire alarm cable causes problems down the line. What I know anecdotally is that the BP5450 made the inspector's job easy—and that ease has value.

When the Crown Castle lease makes more sense

I don't want to come across as anti-lease. The math flips in a lot of situations:

  • If your route crosses public streets or needs utility easements, self-building turns into a permitting project. Leasing avoids that entirely.
  • If you expect to be in the building less than 5 years, the build payback won't happen. For us, the break-even was around year 4.5.
  • If your capital budget is locked but operating funds are available, a monthly lease is easier to approve than a build invoice.

Crown Castle's quote process was genuinely easy—one call, one contract. For a single building, a temporary site, or a route with obstacles, I'd lease without hesitation. Our situation was different: owned campus, long horizon, dedicated conduit path.

What I'd check first next time

  1. Cable gland compatibility. Ask for a sample fitting before buying bulk. This one detail cost us $6,300.
  2. The full cost path, not the cable. Our cable was 29% of the project. Don't let 29% of the decision consume 100% of the attention.
  3. Where the cable was made. If a distributor can't tell you which plant produced it and what testing was done, that's a signal.

In the end, the Prysmian cable had zero issues. Reels met their stated lengths. The install went to schedule after the gland fix. The inspector passed everything on the first visit.

That consistency has real value. It just doesn't arrive as a line item on the invoice.
